7 Aug 06 - 9 Aug 06 - Departure and arrival at Zakinthos

Whoo hoo... finally we got going.

Departure from Athens with Panos onboard towards Korinth via the Korinth Channel.at 2:30 in night. The ship was still a mess inside in terms of being messy and dirty, but we will clean up bit by bit as we go along.

The wind was hard from NNW, which is seemingly quite unusual here. It ment that the wind was the worse possible, except storm, for our journey, and we had to go for engine most of the way, although we had sails up for the part to the channel as an assistance.

The sea was quite rough and showing its teeths. Esmeralda and Katharina got seasick and quite fast went to sleep in one of the cabins (or the toilet).

But they both handled their seasickness very well I must say! No panic or anything similar.

The Korinth Channel is quite spectacular in its own when sailing in it. We got some nice pictures, of it and will attach them as soon as possible (when broadband allows for it).

We arrived at Korinth (N37.56.6, E22.56.1) at 13:00 8 Aug 06.

We have a leak somewhere around the main top window in the saloon. Its seemingly not the window itself or its sealing, but may be something underneath some teak trim near to it. We will investigate when we can. The leak is fortunately not big enough to cause trouble, but is nonetheless annoying.

Our new toilet sometimes behaves strange. I wonder if its sensitive to correct voltage and thus it is affected when we are running on the service batteries (which seemingly do need a replacement sooner rather than later). The main engine started battery and the generator starter battery both was replaced with new before departure.

Panos was picked up by his girlfriend (when are you gonna be married Panos and Maria?) in Korinth. We waited it out for 8 1/2 hours there due to terrible headwinds. 2 large motorboats came in for full speed and caused massive waves which made all the sailing boats who had sought refuge there trimble badly towards the concrete wall in the harbour next to which we moored. Fortunately only thing that was damaged on our vessel was the socks around the fenders.

At 21:30 we departed from Korinth towards Zakinthos on the island of Zakinthos. The island has a couple of interesting areas which we are going to investigate on the 9. Aug. 06. One of them is the bay of turtles and the other is wreck beach. A seemingly beautifull beach with a wreck on.

At midnight we noticed a large fire on some mountains on Pelepones. We passed under the large bridge between Pelepones and mainland Greece at 9. Aug 06. 09:00 and arrived at Zakinthos (N37.47.05, E20.54.14) at 19:30.

After mooring and refilling with diesel on the generator (15 additional liters) and the main engine (385 liters) we went out to see this very much touristic, but nice, city area near the boat and to get something to eat.

The meal was not much to write about, but the cold colas and sprites felt very well in my throat. The amount of salt digested while sailing is quite amazing.

Esmeralda, I and Katharina went back to the ship to clean up some more, while Soeren and Nikolai went bird hunting (hint hint... they arent ornitologes).
