Communication

You are here: Home > Sailing the boat to Denmark

By mobile

Only possible while we are in GSM range. That generally means that it will work within 2-5 nautical miles from the shore. In Danish waters there is generally good coverage.

Contact to Kim Madsen is +45 41 44 05 17 (current out of order) or +45 26 21 05 17. Please beware that its costing me a fortune per minute to answer a call while Im outside Denmark!
Better send an SMS, as that usually will be delivered automatically when we get GSM coverage again. (Note though.. SMS is NOT a reliable way of communication. They DO get lost at times.)

By satellite phone

Possible whenever we have the satellite phone outside the salon (in the cockpit). For the satellite phone to work, it need to have 'line of sight' to one or more of the 48 satellites circling the earth in the GlobalStar system.

The phone can operate as either a normal GSM phone or as a satellite phone. Its phone number is: +45 20 83 05 17 (currently out of order)

When operating in GSM mode it has the same roaming cost as any other normal mobile phone. That essentially means that its costing us around Euro 1-2/minute to receive a call when in GSM mode. When it operates in satellite mode, the cost is around Euro 1/minute for us to receive a call. So please only use for emergency situations.

When the phone is operating in satellite mode, you can also call the phone using this number: +88 20 83 05 17 (which may be the better option to use to call us from another country than Denmark).

The cost to call our satellite phone from for example Denmark, is approx. Euro 7/minute. This obviously varies according to whatever your local telephone company have of agreements with GlobalStar.

When we call out using the satellite phone, the cost is around Euro 7/minute.

You can send us SMS's which we receive on the satellite phone regardless of its in GSM or satellite mode. It is FREE for us to receive the SMS's so that is one way of saying 'hi' to us. Please SMS to +45 20 83 05 17.

We can also send SMS's via the phone (cumbersome but possible). Its cost is for us approx. 1/2 Euro each so we will probably limit that somewhat.

(Note though.. SMS is NOT a reliable way of communication. They DO get lost at times.)

By Skype text chat (not voice unless we have Wifi coverage)

When we get GSM, 3G or Wifi coverage we will try to connect to the internet. As text chatting is relatively cheap this way (we pay approx Euro 11/MB while roaming, but it takes quite many text chat messages to get to a MB worth of data), we will get online when we can. Write to 'kimbomadsen' as the Skype contact name. Please do not misuse this as we will ban contacts trying to send large amount of data or doing voice calls without having agreed about it first!

VHF

We have 4 VHF radios on board, of which two of them are stationary with outside fixed antennas.

Our call signal is OVYM and the MMSI number is: 219 009 007.

Please remember that VHF is only reaching about 40-60 nm and thus you probably wont hear us say 'hi' if your VHF equipment is 2000 nm away (bird line) in Denmark or elsewhere :)
